Dogs are members of the family, but that doesn’t mean it’s safe for you to feed them human foods. While your intentions may be good, some foods can cause dog obesity, allergies, and pet toxicity. Scroll on to learn more about harmful human foods for dogs:
1. Onions and garlic
Never feed your dog with anything from the onion family. These foods contain dangerous compounds known as N-Propyl disulfide, which causes gastroenteritis and anemia in dogs. If taken in large quantities, it leads to damage of red blood cells.
2. Avocados
Do you want to offer your dog an avocado treat? Don’t! Avocado fruits have a compound known as persin, which is highly poisonous to dogs. The compound makes fluids to accumulate at the chest and the lungs of the dog. Therefore, the dog dies due to an insufficient supply of oxygen as accumulated fluids lead to deprivation of oxygen.
3. Caffeinated beverages
Do all you can to keep your dog away from caffeinated beverages. Coffee, caffeinated teas, energy drinks, and sodas have a high concentration of theobromine. However, you might not have known that mixing caffeine and theobromine makes your dog suffer from toxicosis. The dog dies due to high body temperature.
4. Grapes and raisins
Grapes and raisins are known to cause kidney failure in dogs. But, what are compounds that are responsible for kidney failure? Unfortunately, the compound is still not known. While toxicity varies depending on the quantity consumed, even small amounts are known to cause death. Avoid grapes and raisins altogether.
5. Dairy products
You may have heard that dogs that consume dairy products die due to liver failure. This is what happens. Most of these products contain an ingredient known as xylitol. Injecting it in a dog’s body leads to insulin surge leading to the blood sugar dropping. In the end, the liver fails.
6. Chocolates
Yes, chocolate is harmful to dogs, courtesy of a compound known as theobromine. While all categories of chocolates contain theobromine, dark and baking chocolate has a high concentration. It interferes with the dog’s alimentary canal leading to diarrhea and vomiting. If not treated, it leads to tremors and seizures and finally causes death.
7. Peaches and plums
The seeds and the pits of peaches and plums are poisonous in nature. When dogs consume peach seeds, their small intestine gets inflammation. The seeds also contain compounds that obstruct the intestines. Moreover, these two fruits are known to contain a compound known as cyanide. The compound leads to digestive problems and, therefore, should not be consumed.
